Daniel H Bell is a British artist living and working in the UK, with a practice that involves drawing, painting and filmmaking. His work explores the fragile relationship between humans and their natural environment. With enigmatic set pieces, involving various animal and hybrid characters, he presents an eerie and disjointed modern world.
Bell's paintings revel in ambiguity, using the medium to stretch from stained, decaying surfaces to alien environments and friendly faces. His drawings show a similar approach, with the realistic, the cartoon-like and the abstract, all combining to blur boundaries and make new connections. There is an intuitive approach to the two-dimensional pieces, with bodies, faces and objects all shifting towards the uncanny.
Bell's video work delves deeper into these ideas, presenting a visceral coming together of different species and technologies. His films take shape through the construction of models and puppets, some manipulated using stop-motion techniques, and others employing more unique and specialised mechanisms. With a wide mixture of materials and footage, there is the added presence of real animals that are sometimes living and sometimes dead.
Bell shows a kind of nature that has been taken apart and reconfigured by humans. He presents individuals and situations that are relatable, but at the same time disconnected and uncertain.
